The Malabar Trogon is found in the forests of the Indian Peninsula and Sri Lanka. In India, it occurs mainly in the Western Ghats, Central Indian forests, and parts of the Eastern Ghats. They are insectivorous and may migrate seasonally in hilly forest areas depending on rainfall. These birds still perch on the branches under the canopy and are often distant from the viewer. In Kerala, it is called Theekakka (literally "fire-crow"). Taking the three-hour Trogon Trail, if lucky, is a rare opportunity for visitors to have a view of this easily missed bird.
