The Periyar Lake is situated within the National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary. Its whole footprint is 26 square kilometres or 10 square miles. At 100 metres above sea level, the lake is the lowest point in the Periyar forest complex. Thekkady Lake is another name for the Periyar Lake that is frequently used. However, due to its obvious location inside the Periyar National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary, Periyar Lake is the name by which it is most often known. It's interesting to note that this lake was created as a result of the 1895 damming of Periyar (Mullaperiyar) the largest river in Kerala. The current Periyar Lake covers 26 square kilometres. When you take a boat out on the lake, you may get up close and personal views of the water birds that are famed for this reservoir. Periyar Lake is located within a protected region and helps to preserve vegetation, birds, fish, and other natural creatures, some of which are rare, indigenous species.
