Chaliyar River is the fourth longest river in Kerala with a length of 169 km which is closely associated with the history and culture of the Malabar region. Chaliyar is also known as Chulika River, Nilambur River or Beypore River due to its proximity to the sea. The banks of the Chaliyar river in the Nilambur district are also known for their natural gold fields. The Chaliyar was extensively used as a waterway to transport timber from the forest areas in and around Nilambur to the Kallai mills in Calicut. It has abundant mangrove forests that support rich biodiversity. Many bird species and rare fish can be found here.
